1809-10. 2-storey and basement, 5-bay unmatched pair of vernacular houses in angled terrace to SW. Squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings.
SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATIONS:
NO 8: bays to right of centre with door to left and window to right at ground, regular fenestration at 1st floor.
NO 9: bays to left of centre, closely aligned at ground, with door to centre and flanking windows, further windows to outer bays at 1st floor. Basement door to outer left.
NE (DRUMMAWHANDIE ROAD) ELEVATION: small blocked window to left in gablehead and lower bay to right with 2 windows to ground (that to right altered from door) and single window at 1st floor.
Modern glazing. Grey slates and traditional rooflights. Coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and some cans, ashlar-coped skews.
The square was laid out in 1809-10 but was still incomplete by 1822. Parts have since been replaced and others perhaps never built thus the square no longer has architectural unity. Originally called 'The Octagon' or 'Sexagon'.
