contractor. 1859. 50' high Greek Doric column surmounted
statue of Hugh Miller raised on plinth dressed in cape and
plaid with pile of books representing his works and
geological speciment in right hand. Laurel wreaths on 3 sides
of plinth and representation of Miller's winged fish from the
Old Red Sandstones of Cromarty on 4th. Rusticated stone base
with marble tablet. Cast-iron railings. Base of Old Red
Sandstone from Shore quarry and rest of yellowish sandstone
from Daviston quarry.
Tablet inscribed IN MEMORY OF HUGH MILLER AND IN
COMMEMORATION OF HIS GENIUS, AND LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC
EMINENCE, HIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY HIS COUNTRYMEN. BORN
AT CROMARTY 10TH OCTOBER 1802; DIED 14 DEC 1856.
The Shore quarry was "the first scene of Mr Miller's labours
and of his geological researches".
