Description

1802. 2-storey, attic and cellar, 3-bay former manse, with adjoining service wings. S elevation squared, coursed and pinned rubble, remaining elevations rubble; ashlar dressings. Lintel course at eaves level and eaves cornice. Raised margins. Raised angle margins.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: corniced and architraved doorpiece at centre; deep-set panelled door with radial fanlight. Canted windows with cornice and blocking course at ground outer bays. Regular fenestration at 1st floor. Single storey bay, with 2-leaf glazed door, recessed to left. Transverse screen wall, with entrance to court, recessed to right. Wrought-iron light bracket and suspended lantern above door.

N ELEVATION: bipartite window to right at ground. Window, with slit window flanking to right, and window to left at 1st floor. Lower gabled service wings adjoined to left and centre: single storey block to right. 4 windows to N elevation, evidence of former door on right return: single storey and attic, 2-bay block to left, regularly fenestrated, piended dormer windows breaking eaves.

W ELEVATION: window to right at 1st floor, small attic window to right. Lean-to block adjoined at ground, visible as screen wall on S elevation: canted window at centre; segmental-arched doorway at basement to right, bricked up and with modern door.

E ELEVATION: small attic window to left. Lean-to outbuildings, enclosed within walled court, adjoined at ground; saddleback coped rubble wall.

Small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case windows; largely 12-pane, 8-pane in side lights of canted windows. 2 modern slate-hung gabled dormer windows to S pitch. Coped skews. Gablehead stacks, rendered to E. Grey slates.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: semicircular and flat coped rubble wall; pyramidal-capped square piers.

Statement of Interest

This building was constructed as the manse of the Parish Church, East Church (St Nicholas).
