Description

Earlier 19th century. 3-storey and attic, 2-bay terraced tenement with shop at ground. Ashlar. Base course. Raised cills. Moulded band course

between 1st and 2nd floors, eaves cornice and blocking course, each

continuous with Nos 83 and 85 High Street (see separate listing).

EAST (HIGH STREET) ELEVATION: late 19th century shop front with Corinthian pilasters and cornice intercepting 1st floor cills; 2 plate glass windows flanking central recessed doorway. Regular fenestration at 1st and 2nd floors.

WEST ELEVATION: harled M-gabled 3-storey building adjoined. shared with Nos 83 and 85 High Street; brick gablehead stack to right.

NORTH (MILLER'S CLOSE) ELEVATION: door entered from pend: flush panelled door to left in finely pilastered and panelled depressed-arched doorpiece, fine astragals, looped glazing pattern to fanlight with etched glass, half boarded.

SOUTH ELEVATION: rendered above adjoining building, No 77 High

Street (see separate listing).

12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. Piended canted dormer window, with 12-pane glazing pattern, to centre of E pitch. Coped skews. Broad rendered stack to north. Grey slates to steeply pitched roof.

INTERIOR: moulded cornice, frieze and console bracket to stair wall; cornice and ceiling rose to 1st floor room to east.

Statement of Interest

B Group with Nos 67-71, 75, 77, 83 and 85, 87, 89 and 91, and 93 High Street, and No 1 Edinburgh Road.

The building was repaired circa 2014 as part of Dalkeith Townscape Heritage Initiative, including reinstatement of 12-pane timber sash and case windows.

Statutory address and listed building record updated in 2015. Forermly listed as '81 High Street'.
