Description

Earlier 19th century, incorporating later 18th century work. 3-storey, 3-bay tenement with semicircular stair tower at rear. Rubble; W elevation squared and coursed. Earlier masonry at ground floor; stair tower harled. Raised droved margins; raised cills on E elevation. Base and eaves courses. Band course between ground and 1st floors.

W (LOTHIAN STREET) ELEVATION: corniced door at centre, raised surround with lintel inscribed "1775"; 2 steps to door with letterbox fanlight. Regular fenestration at ground, 1st and 2nd floors. Decorative wrought-iron window guards to 1st and 2nd floors. Rainwater goods to left of centre bay.

E ELEVATION: stair tower with cat-slide roof out-of-line to left of centre; door and window at 1st and 2nd floor to N. Regular fenestration to outer bays, narrower windows at ground. Small window slapped to left of bay to right at ground. Right corner chamfered at ground.

N ELEVATION: blank.

S ELEVATION: mutual off-set flue with adjoining single storey cottage, No 2 Lothian Street (see separate listing). Largely plate glass glazing pattern in sash and case windows; replacement glazing pattern to windows at ground. Coped skews. Rendered and lined stacks, gablehead to N and S. Grey slates.

The ground floor of this building appears to be of later 18th century date, with the upper floors having been added in the earlier 19th century.
