Description

Charles Ower 1857, opened 1865, converting James Leslie's unfinished tide harbour, begun 1833, to a wet dock of 8.5 acres. Rougly rectangular, with sea entrance at chamfered SE angle: access to Victoria Dock in E wall. Depth 18 feet, entrance width 54 feet. Quayage 2,425 feet of Kingoodie ashlar with capstans and other dockside furniture.

Floating steel caisson dock gate at entrance doubles as bridge.

Statement of Interest

Delayed by litigation with contractors. Now primarily used for timber and scrap metal berths.
