Description

Frank Thomson, 1919. Tall, narrow single-storey, single bay entrance to former offices of Stewart's distillers. Polished grey granite, bronze doors and window, concealed roof.

FRONT ELEVATION: tall round-headed and keystoned arch to centre, slightly recessed 2-leaf glazed doors with ornate grille, transom inscribed 'STEWART', small-paned and border-glazed window above with garlanded stained glass feature to top (depicting a Glengary and the date 1831); pilasters to left and right with bronze laurel wreath motifs at capitals, corniced frieze and blocking course.

INTERIOR: single barrel-vaulted space with scale and platt stairs to landing; black and white marble floor, timber framed stair balustrade with wrought panels depicting the coats of arms of the Houses of Lords and Commons, the Admiralty, the War Office, the Belgian government and the King of Spain; richly moulded consoled frieze and cornice, ribbed and panelled ceiling; brass geographical indicator set into floor.

Statement of Interest

An interior plaque records Frank Thomson as the architect. The offices to which this was the grand entrance are at the adjoining 42-48 Castle Street, also listed.
