Description

David Cousin, 1858, incorporating earlier building. 3-storey, 5-bay, palazzo-style bank. Sandstone ashlar, snecked pinkish rubble with cream ashlar dressings to rear, concealed slate roof. Base course, string course to ground floor, dentilled cill course to 1st floor, cill band to 2nd floor, decorative wallhead frieze, deep modillioned cornice; architraved windows to ground and 1st floor, consoled and corniced to ground, consoled and pedimented to 1st, angle-headed to 2nd floor in recessed square-headed panels, 2-pane timber sash and case windows,

smaller pane to top. Corniced ridge stack.

FRONT ELEVATION: 2-leaf panelled door to centre, portico with paired Corinthian columns and 4 acroteria, 2 windows to right, window to left and 2-leaf panelled door to far left with doorcase detailed as window, 5 windows to 1st floor, centre window with colonettes, 6 windows to 2nd floor.

EAST ELEVATION TO HORSE WYND: 3 ground floor and 2 basement windows to centre block, door and 1st floor window to advanced block at right, window to recessed block at left.

REAR ELEVATION: various 2- and 12-pane sash and case windows.

INTERIOR: banking hall has pilastered frieze with key pattern and anthemion decoration, 8 Corinthian columns supporting large central semi-glazed dome; triangular-pedimented timber doorcases; 2 marble chimneypieces; gilt wall clock, Rattray of Dundee, depicting royal arms.

RAILINGS AND LAMPSTANDARDS: decorative cast-iron railings to front elevation and enclosing re-entrant angles to Horse Wynd elevation,

4 cast-iron baluster-type lampstandards on tall octagonal bases with ladder bars and globe lanterns.
