Description

Late 18th century. 3-storey and attic, 4-bay tenement, altered from 4-storey during 19th century by heightening ground floor public house into 1st floor. Random rubble, ashlar dressings, rendered to side and rear, grey slate roof. 19th century cornice to ground floor; margined angle to left and between 1st and 2nd bay from right where right bay recedes, margined windows with original 12-pane timber sash and case glazing pattern, multi-pane canted dormers. Ashlar-coped skews and skewblocks, gable and wallhead stack.

FRONT ELEVATION: corniced and consoled public house front to ground floor restored in sympathetic style, 4 windows to 1st and 2nd floor, cut-down wallhead stack, 2 dormers.

LEFT RETURN GABLE: margined window to ground floor inserted circa 1985 in place of larger shop window; older margined window to top floor, gable stack.

REAR ELEVATION: central near-hexagonal 4-storey stair tower with forestair to 1st floor; stair may have been heightened in 19th century for access to attic. Squint windows to right re-entrant angle, ground and 1st floor windows blocked.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

Similar to the contemporary Morgan Tower, 133-139 Nethergate, but without the bowed front. Each may originally have been free-standing.
