Description

Frank Thomson, 1904. Edwardian baroque, 2-storey red ashlar
library on triangular site.
Entrance on angle approached by steps framed by paired
giant Ionic columns and entablature. Doric columned open
pedimented doorpiece surmounted by figures of learning
(Albert Hodge, sculptor), channelled ashlar and mullioned
window over. Parapet stepped to give raised corniced centre
block.
Identical elevations to Perth Road and Blackness Avenue:
symmetrical 5 bays, centre 3 bays recessed between engaged
Ionic columns, end bays channelled ashlar, advanced. Ground
floor windows have keystones breaking pediments, alternately
triangular and segmental. Blind 1st floor, except smaller windows
at end bays. Entablature and balustraded parapet.
Timber cross windows, leaded glazing.
Railings to street, stone piers, iron gas lamps and low
boundary walls.
INTERIOR mainly as built, with fine elliptical stair.
