Description

George Angus, 1832, following the layout of William Burn, 1824. 3-storey and attic, classically-detailed block of shops, offices and flats arranged in 2 sections of 9 symmetrical bays, formerly part of the (mostly) unified Reform Street. Painted ashlar, concealed slate roof. Pilastered and balustraded ground floor (pilasters and balustrade removed from No 58); cill band to 2nd floor, dentilled and corniced balustraded parapet (balustrade removed from Nos 46-58). Architraved windows to 1st floor, plain to 2nd, originally 12-pane timber sash and case glazing pattern, some now 2- and 4-pane; piended dormers. Fluted Ionic-columned distyle in antis doorpiece to centre bay of each section. Corniced axial stacks.
