Description

John Willet and George Mackay, engineers, 1869-70. 7-arch former railway viaduct. Coursed bull-faced pink rubble sandstone, voussoirs margiined and stugged on underside, red brick soffits. Battered piers with rock-faced corbels and moulded impost blocks to round-headed arches. Giant pilasters and N and S; coped parapet of massive bull-faced blocks with cornice; modern wrought-iron railings.

Statement of Interest

The Forfar District Railway (Dundee to Forfar) was opened by the Caledonian Railway Co in 1870. WilliamLeslie was the contractor for the bridge's construction. Balmossie viaduct is no longer used for its original purpose but remains an important picturesque element in the landscape. The railings were added by the District Council to allow the safe passage of pedestrians.
