Description

Late 19th century. Single storey and attic, basically rectangular-plan, former stable court to Rocknowe House. Snecked and coursed sandstone rubble, tooled dressings margined at angles and openings, grey slate roof. 8-pane sash and case windows; coped skews with skewblocks; moulded coped gablehead stacks with corbel detail at S.

S ELEVATION: 3-bay, symmetrical. Carriage entrance at centre with keystoned elliptical-arch with cavetto surround and pilasters; hayloft door above in gabled dormer with weathervane finial. Slightly advanced gable bays at left and right; door and window at left, 2 windows at right, small chamfered blank openings above.

E ELEVATION: cottage block at left with door at centre flanked by windows, lean-to at right; single storey block at outer right with piended-roof.

N ELEVATION: 3-gable bay, centre gable advanced, gable at right furthe radvanced; various doors and windows including hay door at centre, and gable dormerhead at left return of right gable.

W ELEVATION: 4 boarded ventilator openings to stable.

INTERIOR: remains of trevises on W wall; cooking range in NW attic.

Statement of Interest

Rocknowe House was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in a modified form. The weathervane bears the initials JAB. The building is currently used as a workshop.
