Description

Fragmentary ruins of collegiate church and, to N, of
domestic/service block.
Church: possibly by John Morow; built late 14th/early
15th century, replacing nunnery which was suppressed 1389.
Surviving work principally S transept, nave and choir,
the last containing elaborate sculptured and canopied
tomb and effigy of Princess Margaret, daughter of King
Robert III and wife of Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas;
sacristy door beside tomb and sedilia and piscina also
elaborately carved - red ashlar.
Domestic block: Long block, range to S ("Provost's
Lodging") built probably first half 15th century and
originally 3 storeys; projecting stair and N range, with
tower formerly 4 storeys, said to have been built for
Provost William Stewart (1529-36). Rubble-built with
ashlar dressings.
