James Barbour of Dumfries, 1897. Free renaissance
department store with long symmetrical elevation; mainly
2 storeys; 2-bay centre and single outer bays 3 storeys,
pedimented and with canted 1st floor windows, paired 2nd
floor windows with arched heads. Bull-faced red ashlar
with polished dressings to sculptured friezes and
tympana. Wide central entrance with modern canopy; other
ground floor openings large and square, glazed, and
divided by plain piers. Upper windows sashes; wide
dormers to intermediate bays behind wall-head balustrades;
slated roofs.
