Description

Charles Hay of Dumfries, architect 1907. Northern
European profile with some Renaissance details. Large
rectangular-plan college block with symmetrical
elevations. Tall modern additions to either flank. 3
storeys and attic, off-set over basement. Snecked
bullfaced red ashlar with polished dressings. SW elevation:
tall central tower with wide segmental-arched and
architraved doorway with pierced parapet over; 2 square
or round-headed lights each stage above, niche at 3rd
floor with sculptured figure; tall stage above main eaves
level with clock, boldly projecting and bracketted parapet
walk enclosing finialed pyramidal roof with pedimented
dormers to elevations. 6 plain bays (with 6-pane
glazing throughout) either side of tower enlivened by
tall dormers with steep-pitched swept-eaved and finialed
roofs. 1st floor cill course; cornice; paired end stacks
with linking pierced balustrades; slate roofs, main roof
with leaded platform behind cast-iron brattishing. NE
elevation with stair windows in gabled tall central bay;
flanking bays also with dormers; low flat-roofed range
right also bull-faced red ashlar.
