Description

J Halliday of Dumfries, 1892-3, refronting and re-modelling
1843-4 Free Church. Italian Renaissance; late Georgian
church officer's flat to left (NE) over off-centre wide
pend. Red ashlar, rusticated at base; slate roofs. CHURCH:
5 bays articulated by engaged square doric columns on
rusticated piers and with urn finials over parapet; tall
windows with stilted round arches and round-arched lights;
wide doorway left (modern doors) with fanlight. Dentilled
cornice. Full-height advanced bay on SW flank accommodates
pulpit; low vestry adjoins with door to street.
Interior: also by Halliday; 2 tiers Corinthian columns support
gallery and roof; pilastered and columned round-arched pulpit
recess (modern pulpit); modillion cornice; coffered ceiling;
gallery to 3 sides.
Church officer's flat: (door in pend) 2 1st floor windows,
sashes, with 12-pane glazing pattern; band courses; cornice;
mullioned dormer.

Group with 9-15 Irving Street (Item 182) and Congregational

Church (Item 181). Ecclesiastical building in use as such.

Foundation stone laid 26.8.1843; opened 14.4.1844; re-opened

10.12.1893.
