Description

Thomas Boyd of Dumfries, 1804. Freestanding Trades Hall.
Classical. Rectangular-plan. 3 storeys, arcaded and
rusticated ground floor originally open (arcades filled
1847: now with shops). All painted ashlar, droved above ground
and with architraves. Principal (N) elevation 5 bays, the
inner 3 advanced and pedimented (date in tympanum); main
doorway central; 1st floor windows corniced, central window
with consoled pediment. Sash windows, 12-pane glazing
pattern at 1st floor; otherwise, most windows have glazing
bars removed. 3-bay W flank with central tripartites,
corniced and with columned mullions at 1st floor. Cornice;
piended and platformed slate and lead roof, flues gathered
into massive near central stack.
Interior: some decorative cornice plasterwork; panelled doors
in architraves; good original chimneypiece with husked garlands.
