Description

Dated 1896. Railway hotel. 3 storeys with basement and attics,
9 bays to station court, outer pairs advanced. Squared red
rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings, 1st floor cill band
encircles building.
Station (E) facade: originally symmetrical with central
projecting gabled porch partly roofing steps from
pavement; cast-iron lamps at the foot. Outer 2 bays slightly
advanced with later large 7-light canted bay projecting at
W in front of ground floor. 2 tripartite windows at E; upper
floors with symmetrical arrangement of 1, 2 and 3-light
windows, 3 flat roofed 3-light dormers to centre, large
4-light, timber-framed gabled dormers over outer bays.
Small-paned dormer casements and upper sashes, 4-pane lower
sashes.
Lover's walk facade: asymmetrical; central projecting glazed
timber porch with tripartite stair windows above. Remaining
windows 1 and 2-light. Raised gable towards E with projecting
flue and apex stack.
Side elevations: symmetrical, 3-bay with 2 canted outer
ground floor windows; raised, wallhead chimney gable with
arched window, scrolled skewputts and apex stack. Broad-eaved,
piended slate roof with large, central octagonal cupola with
elaborate balcony and candle snuffer roof.
Set within retaining wall with cast-iron railings.
