Description

Late 18th century. 2-storey, 4-bay, rectangular-plan, gabled, former town house, divided into restaurant at ground with tenements above. Harled, squared, yellow sandstone, rubble to sides and rear. Slightly raised pilaster quoins.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: large, modern windows to ground with entrance centre left. Regular fenestration to upper storey. Architrave, projecting cornice and blocking course to eaves. 2 small, piended roof dormers.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2001.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank gable end.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank gable end.

12-pane, timber-framed, sash and case windows to upper storey, large plate glass windows to ground. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Coped gable stacks and skews.

INTERIOR: refurbished restaurant premises to ground. Upper storey tenements not seen 2001.

Statement of Interest

Despite the modern alterations to the ground floor this remains a good example of late 18th century burgh architecture, the slender projecting cornice to the upper storey is of particular note.
