Description

Dated 1817 with internal later 19th century internal alterations. Single and 2-storey classical villa with 3-storey square tower to W. Coursed, squared whinstone with stugged ashlar margins. Broad eaves. Base course; cill band course; raised quoins.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical 3-bay main villa block with lower 4-bay ashlar block to left, 2 right bays part of house remaining bays make up canted conservatory at S end. Porch at centre with paired columns supporting entablature; urn above; datestone 1817. Tripartite glazed door with large radiating, depressed-arch fanlight. Gently bowed flanking bays with 2 windows each. Tower rises behind villa-block with 2-storey range of house to left. Lower 4-bay symmetrical conservatory block to left, canted on return, large windows occupying most of wall space (16-pane sash and case windows). Slate roof to 2 bays to right with ashlar coping at division with glazed roof to left.

W ELEVATION: 2-storey, 2-bay block over raised basement to outer right with 3-stage to left. Basement enclosed by balustrade of Ionic columns with panelled die and slab coping with ball finials. Windows symmetrically disposed in right block. 2 windows at ground floor of tower with 5-light window with stone mullion and transoms at 1st floor and small 4-light window at upper floor. Slender ball finial.

S ELEVATION: 2-storey, 2-bay main block of house to left with canted end of conservatory to right. Conservatory door at centre with 2-leaf glazed upper,( 4-pane) and 2-pane narrow fanlight. Main range, windows regularly disposed, ground floor windows larger.

12-pane lying-pane glazing for villa elevation; 16-pane sash and case windows for conservatory. 9-pane (3 over 6) sash and case windows for 1st floor. Piend and platformed grey slate roof with lead flashings. Pedestalled, ashlar wallhead stack with 3,4 & 5 octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1992.

Statement of Interest

B group with Gogar Mount lodges, walled garden and stables. Gogar Mount was probably built for David Wardlaw founder of the Scottish Widows Fund. The house was acquired by the Blackwood family in the 1870s.
