Description

Circa 1860. 2-storey and attic 3-bay rectangular plan villa with classical detail, single storey extension to side; grey sandstone, dressed ashlar front and NW elevations, squared and snecked stugged rubble rear and side; base course; eaves cornice and blocking course; architraved and corniced windows, consoled at ground floor; chamfered reveals to canted bay; shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks.

NE (FRONT) ELEVATION: centre bay with painted enclosed pilastered porch (addition) with cornice and blocking course with ball finials, 2-leaf panelled door, tiled vestibule, small window flanking to left with leaded panes and stained glass border, single window at 1st floor above; outer bays with single windows to ground and 1st floor; single storey flat-roofed extension to left with 3 single windows.

NW ELEVATION: 3-bay; full-height canted window to right bay with cornice and blocking course, canted timber dormer with dentilled cornice above; single windows to ground and 1st floor of centre and left bays; small lean-to glazed porch to secondary door to left of centre, wallhead stack above.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: 3-bay; blank bay to left with modern lean-to glazed extension, wallhead stack; centre bay blank with ghost of 2 blocked windows, bipartite box dormer; bay to right with large window with timber surround of pilasters and dentilled cornice, leaded panes, bipartite window at 1st floor above; single storey extension to right with rear door to left, single window to right.

SE ELEVATION: single storey extension at ground floor; central round-arched stair window with leaded lights and stained glass border at 1st floor; 2 wallhead stacks.

Timber sash and case windows, mostly 2-pane upper sashes, 4-pane lower sashes; slate piend and platform roof, lead flashings; 4 wallhead stacks (see above), octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: large vestibule and arcaded hall with neo-medieval tiling; timber stair with turned balusters and newel post with carved dragon (rampant); ornate cornices; rear drawing room with elaborately carved timber fireplace with copper canopy with Art Noveau motifs.

Tall rubble wall with semi-circular coping to rear and sides, low rubble wall to front with saddleback coping, coped gatepiers with metal ball finials.

Statement of Interest

The small size of the fenestrian suggests that 6 Merchiston Park was possibly moved from elsewhere and re-erected with alterations or that the design was very retrograde. It is included in the lists for its unusual form among the Merchiston villas.
