John Baxter of Portobello, circa 1824 with later alterations. Mirrored pair of 2-storey with basement, 3-bay classical terraced houses with single storey flanking pavilions slightly set back. Polished ashlar, deeply-channelled at ground; droved ashlar to basement and flanking wings; squared sandstone to side elevations and rear. Band course between basement and ground, and ground and 1st floor; cill course to 1st floor of No 3; cornice, blocking course; band course and coping to pavilions.
N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 5 ashlar steps with original cast-iron handrails to deep-set panelled doors in outer bays (2-leaf door to
No 4); plate glass rectangular fanlight and windows at 1st floor above each. Windows to each floor of intermediate bays; blinded opening at basement of No 3 immediately right of door. Window and board door to each pavilions.
S (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen fully, 1994.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows to No 3; plate glass timber sash and case windows to No 4 with lying-pane subdivision to lower sections; windows at 1st floor of No 4 taller than those at No 3; 12-pane sash and case windows to rear. Round-arched border-glazed rectangular staircase window to E elevation. Grey slate piended roof; lean-to roof to wing of No 4. Ashlar and coped mutual stack to front; ashlar and coped wallhead stack to W and E elevations, rear of No 4; rendered and coped wallhead stack to rear of No 3.
INTERIORS: not seen, 1994; ceiling rose in place in vestibule.
BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with coping, with original cast-iron gateposts in place, original railings not in place.
