Description

Probably J A Hamilton, dated 1861. 4-storey and basement Baronial corner tenement on gusset site, 5-storey to Duncan place. Cream sandstone, squared and snecked stugged rubble with stugged and droved ashlar dressings, squared and snecked rubble to Duncan Place with stugged dressings. Moulded string courses above ground and 1st floor; corbel course above 2nd floor; stop-roll-moulded reveals; canted bay with stop-chamfered reveals to basement and segmental-arched openings; 3rd floor windows breaking eaves in gabled dormerheads with triangular insets and thistle finials.

SW (DUKE STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay; advanced bay to right with 5-storey canted window breaking eaves in French style pavilion roof, gableheads linked to roof with swept ridges; 3rd floor windows with hoodmoulds and label stops; blank ashlar panel at 2nd floor on W return. Doorway with hoodmould arched at centre; distinctive astragal pattern to fanlight matching neighbouring Nos 79-83 Duke Street (listed separately); single windows above and to left bay.

SW (DUNCAN PLACE) ELEVATION: 4-bay; chamfered angle bay to outer left with shouldered wallhead stack corbelled at 1st floor and with machicolations at 3rd floor. Slender engaged turret with arrowslit windows (cross-shape at 1st floor) and conical roof in re-entrant angle with next bay. Single windows to bay to left of centre. Bay to right of centre with small windows at basement and ground floor; datestone; wallhead stack as above. Doorway to outer right with 2-leaf panelled door, hoodmould rising from stylised corbel shafts, small segmental-arched panel over; single windows above.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: single bay with single windows; small bull?s-eye windows at ground floor to left.

Timber sash and case windows, mostly 4-pane, 12-pane to rear. Slate roof with metal flashings; 2 wallhead stacks (see above), mutual stacks. Moulded eaves gutters and gutterheads.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

Low rubble wall to front, square gatepiers with chamfered arrises and pyramidal heads, iron railings and gates.
