Description

Circa 1800. L-plan, plain classical tenement on an obtusely angled corner site, 4-storey and attic with shops at ground. Cream sandstone, ashlar to principal elevations, polished at ground floor, droved above, coursed rubble with stugged dressings to rear and side. Band course and cornice above ground floor; cill band course at 3rd floor; eaves cornice (blocking course to E elevation).

E (LEITH WALK) ELEVATION: 4-bay; pilastered shopfronts at ground floor with small windows; single windows to floors above; truncated wallhead stack to centre; 2 single dormers with half-piended roofs.

NE (GREAT JUNCTION STREET) ELEVATION: 5-bay; chamfered reveals to doorways; pilastered shopfronts to Nos 1, 3, 5 public house at No 5 with stained glass top panels (circa 1900), modern replacements to remaining shopfronts. Single windows to floors above; blocked windows to 2nd bay.

S (KIRK STREET) ELEVATION: 4-bay; 3 gabled bays to right with apex stack; replacement windows to shopfronts; 2 doorways to outer left; single dormer to outer left.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular windows; wallhead stacks.

12-pane timber sash and case windows, plate glass to rear. Slate roof with metal flashings; 2 apex, wallhead (see above) and mutual stacks.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

Statement of Interest

Forms a continuous corner group with the similarly-detailed later tenement, Nos 7-17 Great Junction Street.
