Description

John Baxter, 1824 with later alterations. Single storey with basement, 3-bay classical house. Polished ashlar to ground, droved ashlar to basement; harled to rear. Band course between basement and ground; moulded string course at lintel height, cornice, blocking course; segmental-arched recesses to openings at ground.

NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 5 steps with original cast-iron handrails to panelled door to centre; rectangular radial fanlight above. Windows to each flanking bay. Windows at basement to outer bays.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: later timber verandah.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to ground; modern metal windows to basement. Window at bay to left of rear elevation replaced with modern glazed door with plate glass fanlight above. Slate piended roof; rendered wallhead stacks to side elevations (squared to SE).

INTERIOR: stone floor to vestibule and hall. Original mantle pieces in place in 3 principal rooms of ground- black marble, later alterations to grate and hearth to room at front right; white marble, later grate to room at back right; timber to room at front left with original grate and caustic tile hearth in place. Doors in good condition, double doors opening rooms to right. Original cornice in place to room at rear right. All shutters still in place and in working order. Later staircase to rear leading to basement (originally with cast iron banister).

BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with polished ashlar coping at front, originally with railings. Tall rubble garden walls to rear.

Statement of Interest

The basement extends to left, interlinking Nos 1 and 1B West Brighton Crescent with No 3 (the ground floor to this pavilion belongs to No 1).
