Statement of Interest

The inscription on the base of the fountain reads 'A tribute to the affectionate fidelity of Greyfriars Bobby. In 1858 this faithful dog followed the remains of his master to Greyfriars churchyard and lingered near the spot until his death in 1872. With permission erected by Baroness Burdett Coutts.' The story of Greyfriars Bobby became a cult soon after the dog's death in 1872, and the fountain, a memorial stone erected by American dog lovers over the grave of John Grey (Bobby's master), and a memorial at the entrance to Greyfriars churchyard (erected by the Dog Aid Society of Scotland in 1981) are still objects of pilgrimage for many visitors. Objects associated with Greyfriars Bobby can be seen in Huntly House Museum.
