Description

Probably early 18th century; later alterations to form residential dwelling. Remains of former windmill integrated into boundary wall to rear (N). Coursed and squared random rubble with large stilted arched opening to ground floor (in-filled with later timber and glazed doors) and further doorway to left (W). Single rectangular window to left (w) at 1st floor with dressed margins.

Statement of Interest

This former windmill is of an early date, and is a good survival of the early phases of the industrial development of the Water of Leith. The windmill is described as 'old' on Bell's 1759 map, and probably dates from the early 18th century. The windmill is characteristic of the rural nature of the Dean area, which continued into the early 19th century.
