Description

Circa 1860. Paved terrace bounded by ashlar retaining wall and stone balustrade, surmounted by obelisks on ball feet with strapwork decoration functioning as lamp standards. Decorative 2-leaf wrought- and cast-iron gate.

Statement of Interest

The A group comprises 15 and 16 North Bank Street (both now forming the College and Offices of the Free Church of Scotland), and the balustrade which runs to the N of them. May have been designed by David Cousin at the same time as his rebuilding of No 16 North Bank Street. A retaining wall of slightly different form appears on the 1854 OS map.
