Description

Early 19th century with later additions. 2-storey (3 storeys to rear) 5-bay classical house (entered from 1st floor by fly-over stone stair with cast-iron railings from railed garden area). Droved ashlar with polished dressings to principal elevation, coursed rubble to sides and rear. Base course, dividing band between ground and 1st floors cill course at 1st floor; blocking course at eaves (raised over entrance). Deep-set timber panelled door with border-glazed fanlight in pilastered doorpiece. Regularly fenestrated. Modern harled addition to rear.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; modern rooflights. Graded grey slates. Stone skews. Corniced stacks (rendered) with circular cans.

BOUNDARY WALL, RAILINGS AND GATE: ashlar-coped coursed rubble retaining wall to S; fleur-de-lys-finialled cast-iron railings and gate.

B group comprises Nos 1 and 3 and Nos 2, 4 and 5 Brown's Place, forming 2 sides of a court (3rd side formed by rear elevation of George Heriot's Preparatory Department) with garden to centre.
