Description

Early 19th century. 3-storey (4 storey to outer left) 8-bay plain classical tenement. Droved ashlar with polished dressings. Base course; dividing band between basement and ground and between ground and 1st floors; cill course to 1st floor; cornice and blocking course to eaves. Ground floor windows and doors in rectangular recesses. Regularly fenestrated; timber panelled doors with rectangular fanlights in 3rd bays from right and left.

BOUNDARY WALL, RAILINGS AND GATE: cast-iron railings with fleur-de lys finials mounted on ashlar-coped rubble boundary walls. Cast-iron gate with fleur-de lys finials and pine cones on gate-posts.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slates; stone skews; corniced brick stacks (rendered) with circular cans.

B group comprises Nos 1 and 3 and Nos 2, 4 and 5 Brown's Place, forming 2 sides of a court (3rd side formed by rear elevation of George Heriot's Preparatory Department) with garden to centre.
