Description

After 1792-4. 3-storey basement and attic, 9-bay former pair of classical houses with flats above. Polished cream sandstone ashlar. V-jointed rustication at ground; at 1st floor, blind balustraded aprons; fluted band course above; triglyph frieze and eaves cornice. Outer bays united as pair of bows; doors to central 3 bays; 6-pane rectangular fanlight at centre; flanking tripartite doors with round-headed radiating metal fanlights (much original glass), framed by pilasters and dentilled cornice (Queen Street model). Pair of piend-roofed earlier 19th century tripartite dormers.

No 61 extended to rear at basement and ground across full width of building; glazed brick facing to lightwell.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Ashlar coped skews; large stone mutual stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: No 57 with later glazed screen in Hall and broad panelled arch to stairhall; cantilevered stone stair with quarter landings and plain round iron banisters, continues to basement; former Dining Room with apsidal end (and bow), panelled dado, early 19th century cornice and ceiling rose, panelled dado, black slate chimneypiece; dado and tripartite window to SE room (with closet off), grey marble chimneypiece to NE room. At 1st floor, former Drawing Room with rose and grey marble chimneypiece; rear room with full-height bed recess (now with door to front), tripartite window, closet off. No 61 with similar Hall; stair with modern wrought-iron banisters continued to 2nd floor, and thence to attic incorporating part of original stair. Former Dining Room with panelled dado; NE rear room with full-height bed recess (presumably) on inner side wall. At 2nd floor former Dining Room with sideboard recess with 19th century plaster cresting, and cornice, panelled dado. Sole flat at No 59, not seen 1995.

Statement of Interest

Exterior very finely detailed. Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
