Description

Circa 1790. 3-storey basement and attic, 3-bay classical former house. Broached cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. V-jointed rustication at ground floor. Tripartite pilastered doorpiece with fluted frieze and rectangular radiating fanlight. 1st floor cill course; eaves cornice.

4-bay ashlar gable end with blind windows and arched stair windows to inner right bay; 2 attic windows.

Coursed rubble rear elevation with projecting bow to S; additions at 1st floor.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: cast-iron spearhead railings; rubble boundary walls to rear.

Statement of Interest

Built together with Nos 2-4, note especially the doorpieces; these houses provide an important introduction to Charlotte Square. A significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
