18th century, renovated Ron Galloway 1996. Single-storey, 3-bay gabled cottage with gablehead stacks; 1996 2-bay piend-roofed addition to W (left). Random rubble to front, rendered elsewhere. Central timber boarded door with flanking windows; similar door to inner bay of extension; window to outer bay.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Coped, rendered stacks with single clay cans. Ashlar coped skews. Graded grey slate.
BOUNDARY WALL AND RAILINGS: cast-iron railings on low, stepped, modern boundary wall.
This small cottage is set slightly below the level of the road, in a prominent position at the junction of Bridge Road, Colinton Road and Woodhall Road. It was the home of Henry MacKenzie (1745-1831), author of "The Man Of Feeling", and is listed because of this connection. The cottage was renovated and extended in 1996 by the architect Ron Galloway. Photos dating from the 1970s show it with plate glass sash and case windows, painted window margins, and render all over.
