Description

David Paton, early 19th century. 4-storey and basement, 9-bay terraced tenement, with centre bay slightly recessed, 4th storey as wallehead attic. Broached ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Base course; band courses between basement and principal floor, principal and 1st floors; projecting cills at 1st and 2nd floor; cornice at 2nd floor; string course and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 9-panel timber common stair door, with shallow 5-pane rectangular fanlight set in blind rectangular fanlight, centred at principal floor, flanked by windows, flanked in turn by pair of round-arched tripartite doorpieces with 6-panel timber door and plate glass semicircular fanlight at No 25, stained glass thermal fanlight at No 29; windows in remaining bays at outer left; 2-bay painted shop front to outer right, with glazed timber door and plate glass rectangular fanlight, plate glass window. Regular fenestration to floors above, with cills lowered in 2 bays to right at 3rd floor, window guard to right at 3rd floor spanning 4-bays; and to basement, with 2-bay shop front to outer left (No 29B, The Torrance Gallery) with panelled timber door and rectangular fanlight, window to left.

N ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (31-37 Dundas Street).

S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (23-23C Dundas Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered ridge and gablehead stacks; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Dundas Street was part of the first extension of the New Town planned by Reid and Sibbald in 1802. Building began in 1807.
