William Burn and David Bryce, 1843; adapted internally by W T Oldrieve, 1909; lecture theatre to rear by Robert Hurd and Partners, 1982. 3-storey, 5-bay Italianate former office. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (stonecleaned). Pair of porches with Roman Architraved windows, consoled at ground with panelled aprons. Doric columns to outer bays containing arched doorways with 2-leaf panelled doors; full entablature at ground with triglyph frieze. Corinthian aedicules and balconies at 1st floor windows with balustraded parapet. Modillioned dentilled cornice and balustraded parapet.
Timber sash and case 8-pane windows (broad central mullion). Corniced ashlar stacks; grey slates.
INTERIOR: fine club-like interior. Full width entrance hall with Roman Ionic columnar screen and delicate stair to E. Library at rear. Boardroom at 1st floor. Much original furniture survives.
Built jointly for the Edinburgh Life Assurance Company, the Edinburgh Subscription Library and the Society of Antiquaries. In the 1860s the interior of No 24 was divided into chambers.
