Description

George Beattie and Son, 1874. 3-storey and attic tenement with Scots Baronial details; 4 bays to Grassmarket, canted corner bay (public house at ground) and 3 bays to West Port. Squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings. Bracketed cornices to 1st floor windows; bipartite windows to 1st and 2nd floors of corner bay. Corbel course with chequer-set machicolations below attic cills. Crowstepped gabled dormerheads at attic; single window to canted bay, 2-window (circular panel in gable) to Grassmarket and West Port. Gabletted dormerheads to flanking windows. 2-leaf timber panelled storm door to public house and 2-leaf glazed inner door with stained leaded glass, fanlight and brass door furniture.

INTERIOR: good interior with bow-ended timber bar, corniced timber gantry with Corinthian columns framing shelved niches and clock in timber frame; etched glass to timber partitions. Decorative plaster cornice to ceiling.

4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows (modern small-pane glazing to public house). Grey slates. Apex and ridge stacks (rendered) with circular cans.

Statement of Interest

B group comprises Nos 1 and 2 Grassmarket, Nos 3 and 7 Grassmarket, No 9 Grassmarket and Nos 7 and 9 West Port. Townscape importance as western termination to Grassmarket.
