Circa 1800. 5-storey, 7x2 bay tenement on corner site with return to St Mary's Street. Sandstone ashlar to principal (N) elevation; dentiled eaves course. Bracketed raised cills to 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors. Painted, round-arched openings to public house at ground floor, corbelled out at curving NE corner. Squared and snecked rubble to E elevation.
Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. 15-pane pattern at 5th bay. Scottish slate. Broad harled stacks with clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
No 2-8 High Street is a good example of a traditional early 19th century Edinburgh tenement. Its prominent corner setting and strictly regular and well-balanced fenestration contribute significantly to the streetscape. The raised cills are a slightly later addition to the tenement possibly carried out between 1850 and 1900. The High Street is located at the heart of the Old Town and has World Heritage Site status. Historically the central focus of public, civic and commercial life within the city, the High Street contains many of Edinburgh's most distinguished buildings including St Giles Kirk and Parliament Hall (see separate listings). Its special architectural and historic interest as one of Edinburgh's primary thoroughfares is unparalleled.
