Statement of Interest

Part of a good run of early 19th century tenement blocks, in largely unaltered condition, on an important route into central Edinburgh. The street was originally called Norton Place as these tenements were built on land belonging to Baron Norton, whose house stood on the site now occupied by Abbeyhill primary school. Baron Norton was born Hon. Fletcher Norton of Grantley in Yorkshire. He was made Attorney General of England in 1762 and elevated to the Peerage in 1782. He later moved to Edinburgh, where he was Baron of the Exchequer for 44 years, until his death in 1820.
