Description

Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay villa with recessed lower and narrow service wing to N added probably mid-19th century. Thinly coursed rubble with contrasting yellow ashlar margins and dressings.

W ELEVATION: plain corniced central doorpiece (contemporary with addition), deep-set 2-leaf panelled door with fanlight; timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing pattern; main cornice continued over flanks; margined and corniced end stacks; piended slate roof swept at rear (E) over semi-circular stair turret.

E ELEVATION: door right, and 20th century trellised single storey top-lit addition, lean-to green house at left. N wing has E-facing door and N-facing windows.

Enclosed by rubble built garden walls; block pediment to pedestrian gateway at S end of W wall.

Statement of Interest

Possibly built for John Jones, son of Dr Snell Jones of Lady Glenorchy?s Church, Edinburgh. Built as Snell Cottage, it later became Park Villa and is now Snellfield. 19th century maps show Nellfield, a larger house to the W whose land is now the RC cemetery.
