Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, 1812. 4-storey and basement, 6-bay terraced block. Band course at principal and 1st floors; cill course at 1st floor; projecting cills at 2nd floor; continual cornice at 2nd floor, returned and terminated at corners; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 9-panel timber common stair door in 3rd bay from right, 9-panel timber door in 3rd bay from left, both with plate glass rectangular fanlights. Windows in remaining bays at principal floor; regular fenestration to floors above and to basement. 4-panel 2-leaf timber door in penultimate bay to left at basement; 2-leaf timber door in penultimate bay from right at basement; shallow multi-pane rectangular fanlights. Flagged basement area.

N ELEVATION: 4-storey and basement, 6-bay elevation becoming 2-4 Northumberland Street. Regular fenestration to all floors, with blind windows in 3 bays from right at principal, 1st and 2nd floors; blind windows in penultimate bay from left, and at outer left, at 3rd floor. Flagged basement area.

S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (10-14 Nelson Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Iron balcony spanning bays at 3rd floor. Grey slate M-roof. Rendered shouldered wallhead stack centred at E elevation, random rubble shouldered wallhead stack, with broached ashlar quoins, centred at N elevation; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997.

RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.

Nelson Street was part of the first extension of the New Town planned by Reid and Sibbald in 1802. Building began in 1812.
