Description

Thomas Brown, circa 1825, with later alterations. 3-storey, 8-bay, symmetrical, classical tenement to Newington Road Nos 58-68 with later 19th century shops projecting to street at ground; 4-storey and basement, 5 x 4 bay classical, corner tenement with shops at ground to No 56 Newington Road and 2 West Newington Place. Droved cream sandstone with ashlar to ground floor (corner tenement only) and dressings. Base course; channelling to painted ground floor to No 56 and 2 West Newington Place; band course; panelled aprons to 1st floor windows; cill course to 2nd floor; cornice to 3rd floor and 4th floor of No 56; blocking course. Later 19th century shops projecting to street not included in listing.

E (NEWINGTON ROAD) ELEVATION: shops at ground advanced to street except at 56 NEWINGTON ROAD: central doorway to shop to outer right; panelled door; plate glass fanlight; modern window replacing two original windows flanking door to right; regular fenestration above and to Nos 58-68.

N (WEST NEWINGTON PLACE) ELEVATION: tenement doorway to outer right; panelled door; plate glass fanlight; regular fenestration above and to left; blind windows to all floors in bay to penultimate left.

Predominantly 12-pane, timber, sash and case windows to 56 Newington Road and 2 West Newington Place; some plate glass; plate glass windows to 1st and 2nd floors 58-68 Newington Road. Grey slate platformed roof; coped, rendered wallhead stacks.

Original railings to steps to both doors at 56 Newington Road and

2 West Newington Place; replacement railings to street.
