Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, 1804-19. 4-storey and basement, 5-bay terraced tenement. Band course below principal, 1st and 3rd floors; projecting cills to 1st and 2nd floors; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: round-arched doorpiece centred at principal floor, comprising panelled timber door, with umbrella semicircular fanlight. Regular fenestration to all floors, with blind windows in penultimate bay to right and bay at outer right, to all floors. Flagged basement area.

E ELEVATION: 5-bay elevation, becoming 20 and 22 Nelson Street. Panelled timber common stair door, with blind rectangular fanlight, centred at principal floor. Regular fenestration in remaining bays at principal floor, and to floors above, with altered window in penultimate bay from left at principal floor, with timber mullion. Continual cornice at 2nd floor, returned and terminated at corners. 3-bay pilastered shop front to right at basement, comprising plate glass window flanked by pair of 6-panel timber doors with plate glass rectangular fanlights, modillioned cornice.

N ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (24-28 Nelson Street).

W ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (3 Northumberland Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Iron window guards in 3 bays to left at 3rd floor of S elevation, and in 2 bays to left at 3rd floor of E elevation. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Polished ashlar wallhead stacks, broached ashlar shouldered wallhead stack, rendered shouldered wallhead stack; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
