Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, early 19th century. 3-storey and basement, 6-bay terraced tenement. Polished ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Base course; band courses between basement and principal floor, principal and 1st floors, 1st and 2nd floors; cill course at 1st floor; cornice and blocking course at 2nd floor, with smaller square windows. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pair of 9-panel timber doors in central bays, with rectangular fanlights, radial at No 28, plate glass at No 30. Regular fenestration to remaining bays at principal floor and to floors above, and basement.

E ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (14-26 Northumberland Street).

W ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (19 and 21 Dundas Street).

12-pane and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rubble gablehead stack with broached ashlar quoins; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railing with balusters and finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
