Description

Perhaps James Nisbet, late 18th century; remodelled MacGibbon and Ross, 1887; internal stair by Basil Spence. 4-storey, originally 3-bay. Painted polished sandstone ashlar. Modern ground floor built out over basement. 1st and 2nd floors framed by giant Ionic pilasters and filled by broad canted window, tripartite at centre and bipartite at sides, with Corinthian capitals to mullions; entablatures to both floors, with pediment at 1st, blocking course at 2nd. 3rd floor with

5 windows flanked by pilasters. Cornice and blocking course.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows. Flat roof to attic; grey slates.

INTERIOR: modern retail unit with some earlier features, including Spence?s stair (partly boxed in) at rear. Saloon with detailing concealed by suspended ceiling to rear of 130 Princes Street.

Statement of Interest

Original 3-bay facade also had Ionic pilasters between the bays. A Group with Nos 129 and 131, whose original facades formed a unified design, as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Built for John Mackenzie. Reconstructed in 1887 for John Gunn. Compare with 115 George Street (see separate listing).
