William Archibald, circa 1780. 4-storey and attic, 4- by 6-bay corner tenement with 2-bay nepus gable to N elevation and 20th century shop front at ground. Coursed Hailes sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. 19th century consoled cornices and architraves at 1st floor to W (St Patrick's Street) elevation. Regular fenestration with projecting cills and raised tabbed margins. Rusticated long and short quoins. Pair of dormers to W elevation.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Gablehead and ridge stacks with clay cans. Grey slate.
A prominent 18th century tenement, making a good contribution to the streetscape of one of Edinburgh's principal thoroughfares. The Southside was developed from the mid 18th century, and Lady Nicolson offered building feus along Nicolson Street from 1757.
According to the Buildings of Scotland volume for Edinburgh this and the opposite tenement, 1 and 2 St Patrick Street (see separate listing) were built by a slater, William Archibald in around 1780.
The projecting quoins and rubble construction suggest the building may have been harled.
