Description

Circa 1775. 3-storey basement and attic, 5-bay tenement with shops at ground, built on corner site on ground falling to N (rear). Coursed rubble with ashlar ground floor. At ground, deep-set doors to 3 central bays; centre to common stair, flanking to shops. 2 piend-roofed dormers, tripartite to right. Gable with window to each floor, and 1 to shop.

Irregular 5-storey 4-bay rear elevation, with garage door created at ground.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows; plate glass to shops. Ashlar coped skews; rebuilt stone stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Nos 35-61 (odd nos) Thistle Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Thistle Street was built as plainer artisan dwellings and workshops and has survived with few significant alterations.
