Description

Thomas Bonnar, 1829-34. 4-storey and basement, 6-bay plain classical terraced tenement. Polished ashlar sandstone at principal floor; broached ashlar to floors above and basement. Base course; band course between basement and principal floor; cornice at principal floor; corniced frieze at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Recessed windows at principal floor, with panelled aprons; architraved windows at 1st floor; projecting cills at 2nd floor, Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: recessed doorpieces with former 2-leaf, 4-panel timber doors with rectilinear-design rectangular fanlights, in bay to right of centre, and in bays to outer left and right, at principal floor; door to outer left with glazed panels. Windows in remaining bays at principal floor, with cill lowered in penultimate bay from left; regular fenestration to floors above and basement. Basement doors in penultimate bays from left and right. Flagged basement area.

NW ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (68-76 Broughton Street).

SE ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (56-60 Broughton Street).

REAR ELEVATION: not seen, 1998.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Broached ashlar ridge stacks; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1998; evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed and pineapple balusters.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Edinburgh New Town A Group, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Built on a sloping site, the stepped-down blocks between and including Nos 42 and 76 Broughton Street are separated by swept-down cornices.
