Description

Hippolyte J Blanc, 1886-8. 4-storey and attic single bay Early North European Renaissance former cafe with narrow gabled frontage. Red polished ashlar sandstone. Modern shopfront at ground. Giant semi-elliptical central arched recess contains canted window rising from 1st to 3rd floors. Flanking panels framed by narrow pilasters; to 2nd floor, oval sculpted heraldic panels and frieze. 6 window band at attic in gable, with crest above in round panel; lion finial.

3-storey 3-bay droved ashlar elevation to rear (Rose Street South Lane) with windows flanking pair of doors at ground and cornice, cill courses above; later harled upper storey.

Timber sash and case windows; plate glass, 6-pane upper sash. Grey slates; ashlar coped skews, pedimented ashlar stack.

INTERIOR: converted to modern retail use.

Built as the Edinburgh Cafe. Suspended ceilings may conceal earlier detailing. Compare with George Washington Browne's Cranston Tea Room Buchanan Street, Glasgow.
