Description

David Bryce and Robert Smith, 1872, with later alterations (John Bryce). 4-storey and attic 7-bay Scots Baronial tenement with shops to ground floor. Coursed ashlar (painted to ground). Round- and basket-arched openings to ground floor. Heriot's-style pediment flanked by obelisks to central 2-leaf timber-panelled door and strapwork to pediments of 1st floor windows. Stone-mullioned bipartite windows in penultimate bays from right and left at 1st and 2nd floors. Pedimented gables to 4th floor windows in 2 outer bays; twin crowstepped gables with apex stacks interlocking on semicircular-pedimented dormer.

Plate glass to shops and in timber sash and case windows to 1st floor; 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows above.

Statement of Interest

St Giles Street was formed in 1869, by the demolition of tenements and closes. The site belonged to The Royal Bank, and was developed by them. St Giles Street became a street of newspaper offices; Nos 12-20 were built as offices for EDINBURGH COURANT. The first printing in these offices took place on 17th November 1873. The ground floor was later altered for Edinburgh and District Water Trust
